Superfood Spotlight

Posted by Health Boutique on

The term superfood refers to foods that are nutrient dense, this means that they contain extremely high levels of a certain nutrient, and sometimes more than one nutrient.  They can be easily added to our diets to fill any nutritional gaps and have amazing health benefits.  Superfoods are usually packed with vitamins, minerals, antioxidants and essential fatty acids, all of which are essential for a healthy living and vitality.

Some of the most popular superfoods are listed below;

ACAI BERRIES; this potent little superfood is rich in antioxidants that can combat harmful free radicals.  Acai is also high in protein which is essential for cell repair and growth.
KALE; one of the most popular superfoods for its versatility, have it in a smoothie, juice, salad or even crisp it up as a salty snack! Kale is low calorie, high fibre and fat free!!
QUINOA; definitely has earned its name as a “super grain”. High in fibre, protein and low GI this tasty grain can replace refined products and keep you fuller for longer!
CHIA SEEDS; these tiny seeds are a fantastic source of omega-3 fats, protein, fibre and antioxidants! One serving of chia seeds contains 18% of the RDI for calcium.
CACAO; being the raw form of cocoa, cacao is a rich source of antioxidants, magnesium and iron.  As if we needed any more reason to start consuming this tasty superfood!
COCONUT OIL; it used to be considered as an artery clogging nightmare! But recently is gaining acceptance for its medium-chain saturated fatty acids that can have a positive effect on enhancing mineral and protein absorption.

The good thing about superfoods is that they can be easily added to your diet, and once incorporated can make a huge difference.
