Beach Snack Ideas

Home made popcorn

Popping your own popcorn at home is a delicious, healthy and cheap alternative to the store bought varieties.  Olive oil or peanut oil are fantastic oil choices for popping your own kernels, they provide a subtle and enjoyable flavor.  Store bought varieties are often packed with sugar and salt, you would be surprised how healthy popcorn can be (when you pop it yourself).

Carrot and Celery Sticks

Chopping up your own container of carrot and celery sticks can be a real lifesaver!  They are easy to eat and leave no mess behind! With a high water content these vegetables will keep you hydrated and satisfied.

Lettuce wraps (instead of a tortilla or bread)

Use your favourite sandwich fillings in a large lettuce leaf, a healthy alternative to a wrap or white bread.  Use a toothpick to secure your wrap and enjoy!

Frozen Grapes

A bag of frozen grapes to munch on may make you the most popular person on the beach.  They wont stay frozen for long, but they wont last long either.

Trail mix

Mix and match any of your favourite ingredients to create a satisfyingly sweet or savory trail mix.  You can include any of your favourite nuts, seeds, dried fruits and grains.  They can be roasted, be eaten raw or have a spice mix added to them.  A classic favourite is the “nuts and bolts” trail mix, here is the recipe below.

Ingredients:

2 ½ cups of nutri-grain cereal

2 ½ cups of unsalted mixed nuts

35g packet French onion soup mix

1 tablespoon lemon pepper

1/3 cup high quality olive oil

Method:

1/ Heat oven to 180° and line a baking tray with baking powder

2/ Combine all the ingredients in a large bowl and mix well to coat.

3/Spread onto baking tray and bake for 15 minutes (stir every 5 minutes)

4/ Set aside to cool, once cool store in airtight container or jar.
