10 Tricks For Better Fruit Salads

  1. Buy seasonal fruit – There are a number of reasons why you should by seasonal fruit rather than frozen, stored and artificially ripened fruit. They will taste better, they are cheaper, they contain more nutrients, there is less of an impact on the environment, you’re supporting your local community and you’ll have more variety in your diet.
  2. Use nuts and seeds – Add some crunch to your fruit salad by adding seeds and nuts such as chia seeds, walnuts, slivered almonds, pumpkin seeds, etc.
  3. Use grains – You can bulk up your fruit salad by mixing in some cooked quinoa, or add some lovely tapioca (not a grain) for a sweet desert fruit salad.
  4. Use vegetables – Add another flavour to your salads like fennel, ginger, rocket or watercress to make your fruit salad a bit more complex.
  5. Spice it up – Sprinkle over slat flakes, pepper, chilli flakes, cinnamon or ground cardamom pods, etc. to add flavour to your fruit salad.
  6. Use cheese – Use cheese (sparingly) in your fruit salads. Some perfect additions are ricotta, feta, parmesan, goats cheese and cottage cheese.
  7. Grill fruit - Chuck fruit on the BBQ and serve warm. Great fruit to choose from would be various stone fruit, figs, pineapples, citrus fruits, pears or pretty much anything you can poach.
  8. Add herbs and/or edible flowers – Add a tablespoon or freshly chopped or torn herbs such as basil, dill, mint or coriander to add a kick of flavour or some edible flowers for decoration.
  9. Use one colour – Stick to red fruits (raspberry, apple, strawberry) or green fruits (apple, grapes, kiwi fruit) or orange fruits (mango, orange, pawpaw) the list is endless and you’ll be surprised about the amount of fruit/veg/herbs you can think of. Or even do two-tone.
  10. Get inventive with your dressing – Do something different and dress your fruit salad with olive oil, balsamic vinegar, lemon or lime juice, maple syrup, yoghurt, honey, berry coulis or spiced syrups.
